Farmers protesting against three agricultural laws passed by the Center have started a hunger strike at various border points near Delhi. Farmers’ unions said they would hold protests in other parts of the country as well.
Protesters at the Ghazipur border in Delhi said they were ready for a day-long fast. The protest has been going on for almost 20 days, with the farmer demanding the repeal of three laws passed by parliament in September. On Sunday, protests continued along the Delhi-Delhi border as more farmers rioted at Singh (Haryana border).
The government has so far held five rounds of talks with farmers’ organizations and the stalemate continues despite changes to the laws and written assurances at a meeting convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Protesters chanted anti-government slogans, sang songs, marched with posters and banners and attended speeches from the stage.
