Bangladesh government to monitor social media to check rumors

The Bangladesh government monitors social media to investigate rumors. Bangladesh Post and Telecom Minister Mustafa Jabbar said that after September this year, the government will be able to monitor and intervene social media content to investigate the spread of rumors through sites like Facebook and YouTube.

He said that the government will have the power to intervene directly, so that the material should be monitored on social media platforms, and if necessary, then be taken down.

Jabbar said some news organizations are also involved in spreading rumors. The government will be able to stop unauthorized news portals after publishing the registration list.

The minister said that law enforcement agencies have gained the ability to stop rumors on social media. He said that the government has been successful in closing about 22,000 websites which publish pornographic material.

However, the minister assured that the government has no intention of curbing the freedom of expression of the citizen and the only purpose of this step is to prevent the spread of suspicious information on social media.
