Bangladesh: IFJ wants proper investigation into the torture of journalist Jahangir Alam Shahin

At Kulaghat in Lalmonirhat district, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members assaulted and tortured Jahangir Alam Shahin, the district correspondent of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, while trying to get information about drug smuggling in the area. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has called for a full investigation into the attack.

On April 15, journalist Jahangir Alam Shahin and his friend Sohag Islam were attacked and brutally tortured by BGB members. They were shot in the eyes, neck and body while reporting drug smuggling in Kulaghat area.

While on a trip to Kulaghat, a BGB patrol team stopped Shahin and Islam. During their conversation, the journalist expressed his displeasure to Habildar Anwar Hossain, Commander of BGB Kulaghat Special Camp and wanted to know about the drug trafficking situation in the area. Then a group of BGB officers attacked Shahin and Islam. Later, they tied the hands and waists of the journalists with ropes and took them to Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station.

The BGB claimed that the journalist was arrested for possessing a bottle of the illicit drug Phensidyl and was injured while fleeing the scene. Later, the BGB filed a case against Shaheen for carrying illegal drugs.

The case was taken to court where Shaheen was granted bail in a virtual hearing.

The case is one of many where Bangladeshi journalists are deliberately tortured and punished on false charges; Where laws, including the Digital Security Act, are commonly abused.

In this regard, Bangladesh Mofsbol Journalist Forum BMSF said: “BMSF is currently investigating the incident. We strongly protest against the arrest, torture and handcuffing of BSS journalist Jahangir Alam Shahin. ”

The IFJ said: “The IFJ has demanded a proper and impartial investigation into the case due to false allegations and misuse of the law by journalists to become a trend in Bangladesh. The government should be punished for the attacks on Shaheen and Islam and such abuse of power should be stopped immediately. “
