Blogger Abhijit murder: 5 people sentenced to death, one to life
The tribunal has sentenced five members of the banned militant group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) to death and one to life imprisonment in the murder case of Abhijit Roy, a science-minded writer and founder of Muktamana blog.
Judge Mojibur Rahman of the Dhaka Special Anti-Terrorism Tribunal pronounced the verdict on Tuesday (February 18th). Before the verdict was announced, four accused in Kashimpur jail were produced in court. Two accused in the case are absconding.
The convicts were Major Syed Ziaul Haque Zia, Akram Hossain alias Hasib alias Abir alias Adnan alias Abdullah, Abu Siddique Sohail, Mozammel Hussain alias Simon and Arafat Rahman Sajjad alias Shams. The court sentenced Shafiur Rahman Farabi to life imprisonment.
Earlier, on February 4, Judge Mojibur Rahman of the Special Anti-Terrorism Tribunal in Dhaka fixed February 18 for the verdict after presenting arguments of the state and the accused.
The accused in the case are- Major (dismissed) Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque alias Zia, Mozammel Hussain alias Simon (organizational name Shahriar), Abu Siddique Sohail alias Shakib alias Sajid alias Shahab, Akram Hossain alias Abir, Md. Arafat Rahman and Shafiur Rahman Farabi. Among them Major (dismissed) Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque alias Zia and Akram Hossain alias Abir have been absconding since the beginning. The other four are in jail.
Judge Mojibur Rahman of the anti-terrorism tribunal on February 4 fixed the date of today’s verdict after hearing the arguments of the accused and the state. The verdict of the case may be around noon, the lawyer said.
According to the case file, the miscreants hacked to death Abhijit Roy in the TSC area of Dhaka University on February 26, 2015 at around 9:15 pm. Abhijit’s wife Bonya was also seriously injured at the time. Abhijit’s father Professor Ajay Roy filed a case with the Shahbagh Police Station on February 26, 2015.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) came to Dhaka to assist the police in the investigation of the murder. Eight people were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the killings. Police claimed that they were all members of Ansarullah Bangla team.
Meanwhile, on March 14, 2019, Monirul Islam, an inspector of the Counter Terrorism Unit of the police, filed a chargesheet against six accused in the case at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. The tribunal then framed charges against the six accused in this court on August 1, 2019.
Besides, 15 people have been recommended to be released in this case. They are Sadeq Ali alias Mithu, Mohammad Touhidur Rahman alias Gamma, Aminul Mallick, Zafran Hasan, Julhas Biswas, Abdus Sabur alias Raju Saad alias Sujan, Moinul Hasan Shamim alias Sifat alias Samir alias Imran, Manna Yahya alias Mannan Rahi, Rana alias Shariful Islam alias Hadi, Selim, Hasan, Ali alias Khalil, Anik and Antu.
