Guwahati: Today, over 16 lakh voters will go to the polls. There are candidates from the BJP, the Congress, and the Asom Gana Parishad in the race. In these elections, EVMs are being used instead of ballot papers for the first time.
Assam has begun polling for 80 Municipal Boards with a total of 977 wards across the state.
Over 16 lakh voters, including 8.32 lakh men, 8.41 lakh women, and 17 transgender people, will decide the fate of 2,532 candidates.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has the most candidates (825), followed by the Congress (706), and the BJP’s ally party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) with 243.
“These elections are the first time EVMs have been used instead of ballot papers,” Chandan Kalita, Presiding Officer, Kamrup on Assam Municipal elections, said.
Across the state, adequate security arrangements have been made.On March 9, the votes will be counted.
