Indian Politics lost two great woman leaders and Delhi’s former Chief Ministers in 17 days

No doubt it is a great loss for Indian Politics who lost two great woman leaders Sushma Swaraj and Sheela Dixit in 17 days.

Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj died on Tuesday night. She was 67. Senior BJP leader was brought to AIIMS at 10:15 am. In 2016, veteran leader of BJP , Ms. Swaraj underwent a kidney transplant. She did not contest the Lok Sabha elections 2019 earlier this year due to health reasons.

This is the second major loss for the country as well as for New Delhi. The city witnessed the death of the second former chief minister within 17 days. On July 20, 2019, senior Congress leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit died at the age of 81. Co-incidentally, both female politicians faced cardiac arrest.

Swaraj was the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi. However, her tenure was very short – from 13 October 1998 to 3 December 1998.

Sheila Dixit appointed as the next Chief Minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj.

Both leaders who were also very close friend were prominent women politicians of their respective political parties – Congress and BJP.

Despite having conflicting views, the two leaders had a very cordial relationship. Both Swaraj and Dixit publicly praised each other. When Dixit died, Swaraj reached her residence to pay her last tribute.

Encouraged by the Modi government’s move to abolish the special status (Article 370), Swaraj tweeted before taking her last breath.
