Early Wednesday morning, security forces in Srinagar’s Rainawari area killed two terrorists in an encounter. Rayees Ahmad Bhat, a former journalist who ran the online news portal ‘Valley News Service’ in Anantnag, was one of the terrorists, according to Jammu and Kashmir police. In August of last year, Bhat joined the terrorist ranks of Lashkar-e-Taiba and was classified as a ‘C’ on the J&K police’s terrorists’ list.
According to police, he has already been charged with two terror-related offenses.
The involvement of a former journalist in terror crimes, according to IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar, indicates a clear case of media misuse.
Hilal Ahmad Rahm, a Bijbehara resident, was identified as another terrorist killed in the encounter. Hilal was also a terrorist classified as a ‘C’.
Both, according to Kumar, were involved in a number of recent terror crimes, including the killing of civilians.
