Juba League member arrested in murder case of journalist Muzakkir
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested an accused in the murder case of journalist Burhan Uddin Muzakkir, who was shot dead in a clash between two factions of the Awami League in Noakhali’s Companiganj.
The arrested Belal Hossain (30) is said to be a member of Charafkira Union Juba League.
He was arrested from Basurhat Bazar around 1pm on Sunday. Belal Hossain Charafakira Union Ward No. 1. Son of Abraham. He is being questioned at the PBI office.
Mujakkir’s elder brother Nur Uddin expressed satisfaction over the incident and demanded immediate arrest of the rest of the accused and bringing them to justice.
Noakhali PBI office police inspector Mostafizur Rahman said, “Belal was arrested in a raid in Basurhat market on the basis of secret information. He was the first person to be arrested in connection with the murder of journalist Muzakkir. Belal is being questioned.
However, the police officer investigating the case expressed inability to say much about it.
Mizanur Rahman Munshi, special superintendent of police at the PBI Noakhali office, said, “Belal was implicated in the incident by reviewing the CCTV footage of Chaprashirhat Bazar during the clash.” He was arrested from Basurhat area this afternoon using mobile phone technology. He is being interrogated. He will be remanded for questioning. However, it has not been decided yet how many days remand will be applied for.
On Friday afternoon, February 19, clashes broke out between supporters of Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader’s younger brother Basurhat Municipal Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza and former Upazila Chairman and Upazila Awami League Organizing Secretary Mizanur Rahman Badal at Chaprashirhat East Bazar in Companiganj. Police also fired several rounds of tear gas and shotguns to control the situation. Nine people, including journalist Muzakkir, were shot dead in a three-way clash while filming the incident.
More than 50 Awami League leaders and activists were injured in the incident. Muzakkir was found dead and admitted to Noakhali General Hospital and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital that night. Muzakkir died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on February 20 at around 11:15 pm while undergoing treatment.
On the morning of February 23, Muzakkir’s father Nawab Ali Master filed a murder case with the Companiganj Police Station accusing several unidentified persons. The case was handed over to PBI for further investigation that night.
