6.9 Magnitude quake strikes off Papua New Guinea coast

A significant earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale struck off Papua New Guinea’s coast today, prompting a quick tsunami warning that was later lifted. The quake occurred at 6:04 AM local time, near New Britain Island’s southern coast, with a depth of 10 kilometers, approximately 194 kilometers southeast of Kimbe, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Tremors were felt in Port Moresby, about 620 kilometers from the epicenter, and in Kokopo, the East New Britain province capital.

Following the main quake, minor tremors of magnitudes 4.9 and 5.3 were recorded. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed no tsunami threat exists for Australia. Papua New Guinea is located in the Pacific near Indonesia.
