India’s Electoral Season Begins: Assembly Elections Announced for Five Key States, Counting on May 4

New Delhi: India’s political landscape is set for a fresh electoral contest as the Election Commission of India announced the schedule for Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry, triggering a crucial democratic exercise involving over 17 crore voters.

The announcement has immediately brought the Model Code of Conduct into effect, placing restrictions on government announcements and welfare decisions in the poll-bound states while shifting administrative oversight to the Election Commission.

As per the announced schedule, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry will go to polls on April 9, while Tamil Nadu will vote on April 23. West Bengal, considered politically sensitive, will witness voting in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes for all five regions will take place on May 4.

The elections will decide the political future of 824 Assembly constituencies, making it one of the significant electoral exercises of the year. The voter base includes approximately 6.44 crore voters in West Bengal, 5.67 crore in Tamil Nadu, 2.70 crore in Kerala, 2.50 crore in Assam, and about 9.44 lakh in Puducherry.

Election authorities also indicated that representatives from about 20 countries are expected to observe India’s election management system, reflecting global interest in the country’s democratic processes.

Key Political Battles Ahead

The elections are expected to witness intense political contests across regions. In West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress is aiming to continue its hold on power, while the BJP is attempting to strengthen its electoral presence.

Tamil Nadu is expected to see a contest between the ruling DMK alliance and opposition formations including the AIADMK and BJP. Kerala is once again heading towards its traditional bipolar contest between the Left Democratic Front and the Congress-led United Democratic Front.

In Assam, the BJP-led government is preparing to defend its position, while opposition parties are gearing up to challenge it. Puducherry is also expected to see a competitive political contest between the ruling alliance and opposition parties.

Focus on Security and Transparency

The Election Commission said comprehensive arrangements including security deployment, observers and monitoring mechanisms are being put in place to ensure smooth, transparent and peaceful polling.

With the election calendar now set, political activity is expected to intensify across the five regions in the coming weeks.
