On Monday, President Droupadi Murmu and Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa engaged in bilateral talks focused on enhancing cooperation on various multilateral platforms, including the United Nations. They jointly issued a commemorative stamp celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations, showcasing traditional Indian Kalbeliya attire alongside Portugal’s Viana dress. The meeting emphasized strengthening trade, culture, tourism, and people-to-people relations while exploring partnerships in emerging sectors such as IT, renewable energy, green hydrogen, startups, and efficient mobility.
Following the discussions, President Murmu held a joint press conference where she described the dialogue as creative and meaningful, and highlighted their mutual support on global platforms. President Rebelo de Sousa echoed this sentiment and advocated for reforms in the UN Security Council, emphasizing India’s potential role as a permanent member. He addressed the current international challenges, underscoring India’s importance in sustaining trust and combating climate change amid global instability.
During her visit to Portugal, President Murmu was warmly welcomed at Praça do Império in Lisbon, received a Guard of Honour, and paid tribute at the tomb of Portugal’s national poet, Luis Vaz de Camões, while also exploring the historical Jerónimos Monastery.
