Karnataka Assembly Passes Bills Amidst Protests Over Alleged Site Fraud: What You Need to Know

Bengaluru:  On Thursday, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed six bills without any discussion amidst protests from the opposition parties BJP and JD(S).

The protests were in demand for a discussion on the alleged fraudulent allotment of sites by Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to land losers, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s wife Parvathi.

One of the six bills passed was the Karnataka Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (Reservation of Appointments, etc.) (Amendment Bill), 2024, which aims to provide reservation in government departments, boards, corporations, and universities for employment opportunities for SC, ST and other backward classes.

Another bill passed was the Karnataka Land Revenue (Second Amendment) Bill 2024 that provides legal status to the Revenue Commissioner and Revenue Commissionerate.

The Karnataka Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains (Amendment Bill), 2024 was also passed to protect monuments by allowing companies, societies or individuals to be empaneled as ‘Smaraka Mitras’.

The assembly also passed the Karnataka Government Parks (Preservation) (Amendment) Bill, 2024 to provide land for the development of Upper Terminal Point under the Nandi Hills Ropeway project on a public-private partnership model.

Other bills that were passed include the Sri Renuka Yellamma Temple Development Authority Bill.

These bills were aimed at providing social justice, protecting monuments, and promoting development in the state.
