Municipal polls: Intense campaigning begins in all districts

Hyderabad: With the municipal elections in Telangana approaching, political activity has intensified across several districts, with major parties stepping up their campaigns to secure voter support. Leaders and candidates have begun extensive outreach programmes, including door-to-door campaigns, roadshows and public meetings, making the electoral contest increasingly competitive.

The Congress is contesting the elections in alliance with the CPI and CPM, while the BRS and BJP are fielding their own candidates in most municipalities. Political observers note that multi-cornered contests are likely in several areas due to the presence of independent candidates.

The Congress is also facing internal challenges in some municipalities due to rebel candidates entering the fray. Such situations have been reported particularly in Mahabubabad, Narsampet and Jangaon, where dissident leaders contesting independently could impact the party’s prospects.

In Warangal district, a total of 1,072 candidates are contesting for 260 wards spread across 12 municipalities, reflecting the high level of political interest in the elections. According to available figures, the Congress has fielded 249 candidates, BRS 259, BJP 238, while 326 candidates are contesting as independents or representing smaller parties.

Political parties are focusing on local issues such as civic infrastructure, drinking water supply, sanitation, road development and welfare schemes as key campaign themes. Candidates are also attempting to mobilise voters by highlighting development works and governance records.

With campaigning expected to intensify in the coming days, authorities are also making arrangements to ensure peaceful polling. Election officials are monitoring the situation closely to maintain a level playing field among candidates. The results are expected to provide an indication of the political mood at the grassroots level ahead of future electoral contests in the state.
