PM Modi Pays Tribute to Swami Vivekananda’s Historic Chicago Speech

New Delhi: PM Modi today remembered Swami Vivekananda’s legendary speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago, delivered on this day in 1893. Calling it a “watershed moment,” PM Modi said the address continues to inspire the world with its message of harmony, peace, and universal brotherhood.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister wrote:
“This speech by Swami Vivekananda, delivered in Chicago on this day in 1893, is widely regarded as a watershed moment. Emphasising harmony and universal brotherhood, he passionately spoke about the ideals of Indian culture on the world stage. It is truly among the most celebrated and inspiring moments in our history.”

The Historic Address

Swami Vivekananda’s speech at the Art Institute of Chicago began with the famous greeting, “Sisters and Brothers of America,” which instantly won over the audience. He spoke about:

  • India’s tradition of tolerance and acceptance

  • Shelter given to persecuted communities like Jews and Zoroastrians

  • The idea that all religions, though different in form, lead to the same truth

He strongly condemned sectarianism, bigotry, and fanaticism, urging for peace and mutual respect among all faiths. His words compared religions to different rivers flowing into the same sea, symbolizing spiritual unity.

Timeless Inspiration

PM Modi said Vivekananda introduced the world to India’s age-old values of unity, peace, and brotherhood, which remain relevant even 130 years later. The speech is celebrated not only as a milestone in India’s cultural history but also as a guiding light for global harmony.

India also honors Vivekananda’s legacy every year on January 12 as National Youth Day, inspiring young generations with his vision of strength, spirituality, and service to humanity.
