The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 is now in effect, following a central government notification issued on Wednesday.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 (14 of 2025), the Central Government hereby appoints the 8th day of April, 2025 as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force,” the notification said.
The government designated April 8, 2025, as the official date for the Act’s provisions to come into force. President Droupadi Murmu assent the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on April 5, after it was passed by the Lok Sabha on April 3 and the Rajya Sabha on April 4.
Today, the central government filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, seeking to be heard first regarding petitions challenging the Act’s validity.
A total of 12 petitions have been submitted against the Waqf Act, including one from Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi and another from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
