Weeds from earthquake in Indonesia, death toll 162, 700 injured

Jakarta : The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck Indonesia’s West Java province on Monday rose to 162. There is mourning all around. More than 700 people were injured in this natural disaster. The intensity of the earthquake has been measured at 5.6 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey said the quake was centered in the Cianjur region of West Java province at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 mi).

Herman Suhrman, a government official in the West Java city of Cianjur, told local news channel Metro TV that 162 people had died and more than 700 were injured in one hospital in the area alone. All the buildings have been damaged.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said dozens of buildings were damaged, including an Islamic boarding school, a hospital and other public facilities. The number of casualties may increase. The tremors were also felt in the Greater Jakarta area. High-rise buildings in the capital have collapsed.
