At least 15 Palestinians, including four journalists, were killed on Monday when Israeli airstrikes hit Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, according to Gaza’s health ministry. Dozens more were injured in the attack, raising international concern over the safety of medical facilities in Gaza.
The journalists killed in the Gaza hospital strike include:
-
Mohammad Salama – Al Jazeera cameraman
-
Hossam Al-Masri – Reuters cameraman
-
Mariam Abu Daqqa – Independent Arabia and Associated Press reporter
-
Moaz Abu Taha – NBC correspondent
Reuters photographer Hatem Khaled was injured during the attack.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assault involved a suicide drone strike on the hospital’s upper floors, including the roof where journalists were present. Minutes later, a second blast targeted rescue teams, described by officials as a “double-tap strike.” Ambulance staff and civil defence workers also lost their lives while rescuing the wounded.
The Gaza health ministry warned that repeated attacks on hospitals in Gaza are accelerating the collapse of the healthcare system, which is already suffering severe shortages of medicine, equipment, and electricity. Nasser Hospital, one of Gaza’s largest medical centres, has treated thousands of war-wounded, and its destruction threatens to leave civilians without critical care.
According to the United Nations, Gaza’s healthcare sector is on the brink of total breakdown. Meanwhile, since October 7, 2023, more than 250 journalists have been killed in Gaza, making it the deadliest place for media workers worldwide.
Overall, Gaza’s health ministry reports that at least 62,686 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s ongoing military campaign, with thousands still trapped under rubble.
