Gen Z Uprising Reshapes Nepal Politics as Balendra Shah Defeats KP Oli

Kathmandu: Months after Gen Z youth stormed the streets of Nepal, effectively toppling the government led by former prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli, the country held its general elections on Thursday, March 5, in what many observers described as a decisive moment for the Himalayan nation’s political future.

In a dramatic political shift, Balendra Shah of the Rastriya Swatantra Party defeated four-time prime minister Oli by a huge margin, according to results announced on Saturday, March 7. Shah is now set to form the next government, marking a major setback for Nepal’s traditional political parties.

The election is widely seen as the first major political test after the violent youth-led protests of 2025, when large numbers of young demonstrators—many from Generation Z—took to the streets across the country, accusing established political leaders of corruption, misgovernance, and failure to address unemployment and economic challenges.

The protests had triggered a political upheaval that ultimately led to the fall of the Oli-led administration, reshaping Nepal’s political landscape and forcing mainstream parties to confront growing public anger.

Shah’s victory is being interpreted as a strong signal of generational change in Nepalese politics. Political analysts say the rise of newer political forces reflects the growing demand among young voters for transparency, accountability, and governance reforms.

For decades, Nepal’s politics has largely been dominated by a handful of established parties and leaders. The latest election results suggest that a significant section of the electorate is now willing to shift away from traditional political formations in search of alternative leadership.

As Balendra Shah prepares to assume office, expectations are high among supporters who view his rise as the beginning of a new political chapter in Nepal.

However, analysts caution that the challenges ahead remain formidable, including stabilising the economy, addressing youth unemployment, and rebuilding public trust in democratic institutions following a turbulent period of political unrest.
