Indian Navy’s INS Tarkash seizes 2500 kg narcotics

The Indian Navy’s frontline frigate, INS Tarkash, successfully intercepted and seized over 2500 kg of narcotics in the Western Indian Ocean, reflecting its commitment to combating maritime crime and enhancing regional security. Deployed for Maritime Security Operations since January 2025, the frigate supports Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, part of the Combined Maritime Forces based in Bahrain, and participates in the joint operation Anzac Tiger.

On April 31, 2025, while patrolling the area, INS Tarkash received intelligence from Indian Navy P8I aircraft regarding suspicious vessels suspected of narcotics trafficking. The frigate altered course to intercept these vessels, aided by coordination with the Mumbai Maritime Operations Centre and the P8I aircraft. An integral helicopter was launched to monitor activities and identify additional vessels in the vicinity.

A specialist boarding team and Marine Commandos boarded a suspect Dhow, uncovering sealed packets containing over 2,500 kg of narcotics, including 2386 kg of hashish and 121 kg of heroin. The crew of the Dhow was interrogated to gather information about their operations. This successful interception highlights the Indian Navy’s professionalism in combating illicit maritime activities and its efforts to ensure security in the Indian Ocean Region.
