Kolkata: Police have so far arrested 12 people in connection with the violent incident that took place late Wednesday night at Kolkata’s famous RG Kar Medical College. Based on these arrests, three separate cases have been registered, including one under the Arms Act. On Friday, a senior Kolkata Police official said that there is huge outrage in the city due to this incident and the police have taken immediate action and intensified the investigation into the matter.
After a day-long interrogation on Thursday, 10 people were arrested, who were strictly interrogated by the Kolkata Police. By evening, the police arrested two more suspects. Thus, a total of 12 people have been detained in this case so far. Out of these, 10 have been sent to police custody till August 22. The police shared some pictures on social media after the incident, in which the accused were marked with a red circle. Based on these pictures, the police had appealed to the public to provide information, after which more arrests were possible in the evening.
The incident took place when a protest was going on at RG Kar Medical College against the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor last week. During this protest, the emergency department of the hospital was attacked on Wednesday night. During the attack, it is alleged that some protesters attacked doctors and police. During this, many important medical equipment including CCTV cameras, chairs, tables and doors were broken. However, according to the police, no one was able to reach the room in which the doctor was raped and murdered and that room is completely safe.
The police have registered three cases in connection with this attack, including vandalism, damage to government property and cases under the Arms Act. However, no formal complaint has been lodged by the hospital administration yet. Given the seriousness of the matter, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal himself is monitoring the interrogation process.
This incident has raised serious questions about the security and law and order situation in Kolkata, and the police is now fully engaged in getting to the bottom of the matter.
