Row Over Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cap Missing from Delhi’s Red Fort Museum

New Delhi: A controversy has emerged after Chandra Kumar Bose, grandnephew of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, claimed that Netaji’s cap displayed at the Red Fort museum in Delhi is missing.

In a public post on social media, Chandra Kumar Bose stated that the historic cap had been personally handed over by family members to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019 during Netaji’s birth anniversary celebrations. According to him, the artefact was later placed in a display case at the Netaji Museum inside the Red Fort.

He said that during a recent visit, a member associated with the Open Platform for Netaji (OPN) allegedly found the display case empty, and museum authorities were unable to provide a clear explanation regarding the cap’s whereabouts.

Calling the matter serious, Bose urged the authorities to investigate the issue and clarify whether the artefact has been relocated, preserved elsewhere or misplaced.

Call for accountability

Bose said that as Netaji remains one of India’s most respected national leaders, any lapse in the preservation of his belongings would be a matter of concern. He termed the reported disappearance of the cap as deeply troubling and called for accountability from the concerned authorities.

Related legal developments

Separately, the Supreme Court recently declined to entertain a petition seeking directions to bring back the mortal remains of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose from Japan. The petition was later withdrawn with liberty to file a fresh plea.

Awaiting official response

There has been no official clarification so far from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) or the concerned authorities regarding the reported missing artefact.

Further details are awaited.
