Hyderabad: Studying abroad remains a dream for many students, but the high cost of tuition fees, living expenses and travel often puts overseas education beyond the reach of thousands of families.
To help bridge that gap, the Telangana government has once again opened applications for the Chief Minister’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme for Minorities, a programme designed to support eligible students pursuing higher education in foreign universities.
The scheme, which has benefited hundreds of students over the years, provides financial assistance to minority students who secure admission to recognised universities abroad for postgraduate and doctoral studies.
What is the scheme?
The Chief Minister’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme is a financial assistance programme aimed at encouraging higher education among students belonging to minority communities.
The objective is to help deserving students pursue advanced studies at international universities without being overwhelmed by financial constraints.
Officials say the programme is intended to create opportunities for talented students who have academic merit but may not have the resources required to fund overseas education independently.
Who can apply?
Students belonging to recognised minority communities who have secured admission to postgraduate or Ph.D. programmes in eligible foreign universities can apply under the current round of the scheme.
For the Spring Season 2026 cycle, students who obtained admission between January 1, 2026, and June 30, 2026, are eligible to submit applications.
The government has invited applications from students admitted to universities in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, France and New Zealand.
These destinations continue to remain among the most preferred choices for Indian students seeking international education.
What financial support is available?
One of the major attractions of the scheme is the level of assistance provided.
Selected candidates can receive financial support of up to ₹20 lakh towards educational expenses.
In addition, the government also provides one-way airfare assistance of up to ₹60,000 or the actual airfare cost, whichever is lower.
For many students, this support can significantly reduce the financial burden associated with overseas education.
Why is the scheme important?
International education offers exposure to global research, advanced academic infrastructure and diverse learning environments.
However, tuition fees and living expenses in many foreign countries have risen sharply in recent years.
As a result, scholarships and government assistance programmes have become increasingly important for students from middle-income and economically weaker backgrounds.
Education experts believe that such schemes not only support individual students but also contribute to skill development and knowledge transfer when graduates return and contribute to the country’s economy.
What should applicants keep in mind?
Officials have stressed that all documents submitted by applicants will undergo detailed scrutiny.
Academic certificates, admission documents and other supporting records will be verified before final selection.
Applicants are required to produce original academic transcripts during the verification process. Parents are also expected to be present during document verification at the designated district offices.
Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against candidates found submitting forged or fabricated documents.
Application deadline
Online applications for the Spring Season 2026 cycle are being accepted from June 1 and will remain open until June 30, 2026.
Students planning to apply are advised not to wait until the final days and should ensure that all required documents are uploaded correctly before submission.
Looking beyond financial assistance
For many students, the scholarship represents more than just funding.
It is an opportunity to access global education, pursue specialised research and build international academic exposure.
As more Telangana students seek opportunities abroad, schemes such as this continue to play an important role in turning educational aspirations into achievable goals.
