West Asia Conflict Escalates, Pakistan–Afghanistan Tensions Rise; Global Energy Supply Concerns Grow

Rising geopolitical tensions across West Asia and South Asia are triggering fresh concerns over global energy security, trade routes, and regional stability. The ongoing conflict involving Iran and Western allies, coupled with the latest escalation between Pakistan and Afghanistan, has added to international anxiety over possible economic disruptions.

The Pakistan–Afghanistan situation intensified after Kabul accused Islamabad of carrying out airstrikes on civilian infrastructure, including a rehabilitation hospital, resulting in heavy casualties. Pakistan has denied the allegations, maintaining that its operations targeted only militant infrastructure linked to cross-border terrorism.

The conflict follows weeks of border tensions, retaliatory strikes, and security incidents that disrupted earlier ceasefire efforts. International organisations, including the United Nations, have called for restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation.

Meanwhile, the wider West Asia situation remains sensitive due to tensions involving Iran and concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints. Any disruption in this maritime corridor could significantly impact global crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies.

Energy analysts warn that prolonged instability in the region may lead to volatility in oil prices, increased transportation costs, and pressure on energy-importing countries, including India. Nearly two-thirds of India’s crude oil requirements are met through imports, a significant portion of which passes through West Asian routes.

Experts suggest that India’s strategic petroleum reserves and diversified sourcing policies may help cushion short-term shocks. However, sustained geopolitical instability could still influence domestic fuel pricing and supply chains.

Global diplomatic efforts are currently focused on preventing further military escalation and ensuring uninterrupted maritime trade routes. The coming weeks are expected to remain crucial as major powers continue negotiations aimed at stabilising the region.
