HC Orders Election Commission to hold panchayat polls in three months

Hyderabad: Telangana High Court on Wednesday directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to conduct gram panchayat elections within three months.

The verdict was delivered by Justice T. Madhavi Devi, following the conclusion of arguments on six petitions concerning the local body elections, which were reserved for judgement on Monday.

The petitioners argued that the delay violated Articles 243E and 243K of the Constitution and provisions of the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, 2018.

Justice Madhavi Devi questioned both the State government and the SEC over their failure to conduct elections within the constitutionally mandated period. She noted that earlier assurances had indicated the polls would be held by February and expressed concern over the continued delay, even six months later.
