Justice or Just Noise? HC’s Tuesday Verdict on Man’s Anthem Death

Delhi:  The long-awaited verdict on the plea over the death of a 23-year-old man, Faizan, who was allegedly forced to sing the national anthem during the 2020 riots, will be delivered by the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani will announce the judgment on a petition submitted by Faizan’s mother, Kismatun.

The petition requests an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into Faizan’s death, claiming that the police assaulted and illegally detained him, denying him critical medical care. A video that went viral on social media showed Faizan and four other Muslim men being allegedly beaten and forced to sing the national anthem and “Vande Mataram”. Kismatun’s plea also states that her son’s death on February 26, 2020, was a result of the police’s actions during his detention.

The outcome of this case holds significant importance in determining accountability for police brutality and human rights violations during the riots.
