Tehran: The news of Hamas Political Bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh’s death in an attack in Iran’s capital, Tehran, shocked the world on Wednesday.
According to media, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed in the targeted strike on their residence.
With condolences to the nation of Palestine and the Islamic nation, the IRGC released a statement announcing the martyrdom of Haniyeh and his bodyguard. Just a day before his death, Haniyeh had met with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei, who shared pictures of their meeting on social media platform X.
In response, the Israel Defence Forces criticized the photo-op and accused Iran of funding terrorist organizations like Hamas and Islamic Jihad, who have been trying to harm Israeli citizens.
Haniyeh, who was based in Qatar, was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Iranian President-elect.
This tragic incident comes just months after Haniyeh’s three sons were killed in an Israeli air strike in April.
The death of such a prominent figure in the Palestinian resistance movement has left a void and sparked outrage among his supporters.
