Nightclub roof collapse in Dominican Republic kills 98 including Governor and ex-MLB players

At least 98 people have died following the collapse of the roof at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, early Tuesday morning during a performance by singer Ruby Perez.

Among the deceased are notable figures such as 59-year-old Perez, former MLB player Octavio Dotel, and Montecristi province Governor Nelcy Cruz.

Over 155 individuals sustained injuries in this tragic event, prompting national mourning across the country. The cause of the roof collapse remains undetermined. Major General Juan Manuel Mendez announced at a late-night press conference that emergency services confirmed the death toll and the number of hospitalized survivors.

Search efforts continue for those trapped beneath the rubble, although hopes for finding more survivors are diminishing. President Luis Abinader has declared three days of national mourning and expressed condolences for the loss of Culture Minister Roberto Angel Salcedo.

Prominent artists from the Dominican Republic and beyond have shared their condolences on social media, reflecting the profound grief felt in the community. Santo Domingo Mayor Carolina Mejía also conveyed her sympathies to affected families.
