Palestinian Journalist Killed With Family in Israeli Airstrike, Gaza Journalist Death Toll Rises to 247

Gaza City: A Palestinian journalist, Islam Abed, working with Al-Quds Today TV, was killed along with her husband and children when an Israeli airstrike hit their apartment in Gaza City on August 31.

Her death highlights the growing toll on media workers in the war-torn enclave. According to the Gaza Media Office, at least 247 journalists have been killed since the conflict began on October 7, 2023.

Media Condemnation

The Gaza Media Office strongly condemned the strike, calling it a deliberate attack aimed at silencing the Palestinian narrative. It held Israel and its allies responsible, stressing that the killings of journalists constitute war crimes under international law, the Palestinian Information Center (PIC) reported.

Humanitarian Toll in Gaza

The ongoing conflict has resulted in unprecedented human suffering:

  • 63,500 Palestinians killed, mostly women and children.

  • 159,490 injured, with hospitals overwhelmed and short of supplies.

  • At least 33 civilians killed since dawn on August 31 amid fresh bombardments.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza also warned of worsening famine conditions. In the last 24 hours alone, nine people, including three children, died from malnutrition. Since the International Committee of the Red Cross (IPC) declared famine on August 22, at least 70 hunger-related deaths have been recorded, including 12 children.

Wider Conflict

The war escalated after the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, which killed about 1,200 people and resulted in more than 250 hostages being taken. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has since vowed a prolonged military campaign, despite UN Security Council calls for an immediate ceasefire.

Journalism Under Fire

The killing of Islam Abed underscores the deadly risks faced by Palestinian journalists, who continue to document the war amid systematic targeting of press workers, aid convoys, and medical staff.
