What GHMC Reorganisation Could Mean for Hyderabad Residents

Hyderabad, 15 February: The Telangana government is planning to reorganise the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into three separate municipal corporations in an effort to improve civic administration and service delivery in the rapidly expanding metropolitan region.

According to officials familiar with the proposal, the restructuring is intended to decentralise governance and enable faster decision-making in areas such as sanitation, drainage management, road maintenance and urban planning.

Hyderabad has witnessed significant population growth and urban expansion over the past decade, bringing several peripheral areas under municipal limits. Authorities believe that dividing the existing civic body into smaller administrative units will help local officials respond more efficiently to public grievances and infrastructure needs.

Officials said the proposed reorganisation would allow better monitoring of works, quicker approval of development projects and improved coordination between engineering, health and town-planning departments. The move is also expected to strengthen accountability at the local level.

Urban planners have long pointed out that managing a single large municipal corporation covering a vast geographical area poses operational challenges. Separate corporations may enable focused planning for different zones based on population density and infrastructure requirements.

The government is expected to prepare a detailed framework covering jurisdiction boundaries, administrative structure and resource allocation before implementation.

Further details regarding timelines and operational arrangements are likely to be announced after consultations with civic authorities and stakeholders.
