Bagless Days: Making Education More Joyful and Stress-Free – Ministry Meeting Review

Delhi: The Ministry of Education held a meeting on Tuesday to review the NCERT guidelines for implementing bagless days in schools. These guidelines, developed by PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE), aim to make learning in schools more joyful, experiential, and stress-free for students.

During the meeting, various suggestions were discussed, including sensitising students about the local ecology, teaching them to test water purity, and recognising local flora and fauna. A senior MoE official stated that the guidelines will be further fine-tuned and finalised based on this review. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommends a 10-day bagless period for grades 6-8 students, during which they will participate in activities outside traditional school settings such as interning with local skill experts.

This initiative is designed to help students develop an appreciation for their surroundings and the larger ecosystem in which their school is embedded. Bagless days will be encouraged throughout the year and will include a variety of activities such as arts, sports, and skill-based learning. The official also added that students will have periodic exposure to activities outside the classroom, such as visits to historical sites and interactions with local artists and craftsmen.

The NCERT guidelines list various recommended activities, including visiting the vegetable market, organising charity visits, and visiting biogas plants and solar energy parks. Overall, these bagless days aim to provide students with a well-rounded education that goes beyond traditional classroom learning.
