New Rule to Link WhatsApp and Messaging Apps to SIM Comes into Effect from March 1

New Delhi, February 28: A new regulatory requirement mandating the linkage of certain messaging applications, including WhatsApp, to verified mobile SIM credentials will come into effect from March 1.

The move is aimed at enhancing digital accountability and strengthening measures against misuse of communication platforms. Officials indicated that the rule is intended to curb fraudulent activities, spam communications and identity misuse linked to unverified numbers.

Under the new framework, users may be required to ensure that their messaging accounts are associated with SIM cards registered under valid identification details. Telecom and digital authorities have stated that the step is part of broader efforts to improve cybersecurity and traceability.

Experts say the regulation is expected to bring greater transparency to digital communication while maintaining user privacy under existing legal safeguards.

Further operational guidelines are expected to be clarified by telecom authorities in the coming weeks.
