Heatwave drives power demand to record high across India

New Delhi: As temperatures continue to rise across the country, India’s electricity demand has touched a new peak, reflecting the growing pressure on power consumption during the summer months.

Official data shows that peak power demand reached 256.11 gigawatts on Saturday, the highest recorded so far. The surge comes amid intensifying heat conditions, with increased use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners and coolers in homes, offices and commercial spaces.

The new peak surpasses the previous high recorded just a day earlier, indicating a steady upward trend in electricity consumption as the heatwave spreads across multiple regions.

Weather conditions have played a key role in the rise.
Several parts of the country are experiencing temperatures significantly above normal levels. In some regions, the increase has been around five degrees Celsius or more, pointing to a broader heat stress situation.
In the national capital, temperatures climbed above 42 degrees Celsius, marking one of the hottest days of the season so far. The heatwave has persisted for multiple days, contributing to higher demand for electricity.

Despite the sharp rise, authorities said the demand was fully met, indicating that supply systems are currently holding steady.

However, experts note that demand is likely to increase further if temperatures continue to climb. The overall projection for this summer is expected to go even higher, with consumption levels gradually moving towards seasonal estimates.

The increase is not limited to households. Commercial establishments, offices and small businesses are also contributing to higher usage as they rely on cooling systems to maintain operations during extreme heat.

Electricity demand has been climbing steadily through April.

Earlier in the week, peak demand levels were lower but have now risen sharply with the change in weather conditions. Compared to the same period last year, the numbers indicate a noticeable increase.
This reflects both higher temperatures and a growing dependence on electrical appliances during peak summer months.

With the summer season still progressing, authorities are closely monitoring demand patterns.
If heatwave conditions persist or intensify, electricity consumption is expected to rise further in the coming weeks. This will require continued coordination between generation, transmission and distribution systems to maintain uninterrupted supply.

The current surge in power demand highlights how closely energy consumption is linked to weather patterns.

As heat conditions become more intense, electricity use increases almost immediately — making summer one of the most demanding periods for the power sector each year.

For now, supply has kept pace with demand.
But with temperatures still climbing, the coming weeks will test how well the system manages the growing load.
