Hyderabad: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has been making headlines as it seems to be on its way to retaining one of its Lok Sabha seats outside of Hyderabad.
The early trends and results from the Election Commission of India (ECI) indicate that AIMIM candidate Imtiyaz Jaleel is leading in Aurangabad, while their candidate in Kishanganj, Akhtarul Iman, is currently in third place behind the Janata Dal (United) and Congress. In Aurangabad, Jaleel is benefitting from a split in the Shiv Sena, with one faction led by Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde and another by Uddhav Thackeray. In the 2019 elections, Jaleel had won the seat with support from the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, but this time the party decided to contest on its own.
In Kishanganj, AIMIM was hoping for a victory after winning five Assembly seats in Bihar’s 2020 election, but as of now they are trailing behind the JDU and Congress candidates. However, in Hyderabad, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi is set to retain his Lok Sabha seat for a record fifth time, as his party has been winning the constituency since 1984.
