Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Srinagar to assess the security situation in Kashmir following a terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, primarily tourists. The attack occurred near the famed meadow of Baisaran, known for its scenic beauty, on Tuesday, marking the deadliest incident in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama attack.
Shah arrived shortly after the incident, heading directly to the Raj Bhavan, where he was briefed by Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Nalin Prabhat, alongside Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, and Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka.
A high-level meeting of security officials was planned. The Chief Minister described the attack as unprecedented in scale against civilians in recent years. The assailants, believed to be linked to The Resistance Front, a proxy group of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, opened fire on tourists in the area, resulting in casualties that include two foreign nationals.Ongoing investigations indicate that the attackers may have crossed from Kishtwar.
Following the brief, Shah is expected to visit Pahalgam on Wednesday.
