Three-way contest visible in Telangana civic results

Hyderabad, 16 February: The latest municipal results in Telangana indicated a divided mandate with the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress and Bharat Rashtra Samithi securing influence in different regions.

The BJP registered key victories in Narayanpet municipality and Karimnagar Municipal Corporation. Kolagani Srinivas was elected Mayor in Karimnagar while Konda Shweta became Chairperson in Narayanpet.

The Congress secured Nizamabad and Nalgonda municipal corporations and also claimed Wardhannapet and Kesamudram, earlier declared hung municipalities, through ex officio votes of elected representatives.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi retained strength in the Hyderabad periphery by winning three municipalities in the Patancheru Assembly segment — Gummadidala, Jinnaram and Gaddapotharam — while Independent candidates won Bhainsa municipality.

Meanwhile, elections for chairman and vice-chairman posts in 11 municipalities — Yellandu, Sultanabad, Ibrahimpatnam, Kagaznagar, Ketanapally, Khanapur, Zaheerabad, Inderesham, Dornakal, Jangaon and Thorrur — were postponed to February 17.

The results indicated region-wise voting patterns, with urban municipalities favouring the BJP, suburban local bodies supporting the BRS and closely contested areas going to the Congress.
