Ram Navami procession in MP’s Khargone sees gesture of communal harmony

Bhopal: Khargone town in Madhya Pradesh witnessed a gesture of communal harmony on Thursday when members of the Muslim community welcomed a Ram Navami procession by showering flowers along parts of its route.

The procession, organised by members of the Raghuvanshi community, passed through mixed localities where residents came out to greet participants. Organisers said flowers were showered from rooftops and some residents also distributed sweets to those taking part in the procession.

Pawan Raghuvanshi, one of the organisers, said the gesture reflected improving social relations in the town and was appreciated by participants.

Khargone had witnessed communal tension in the past, particularly during Ram Navami celebrations in 2022, when violence broke out following clashes during a procession. The incidents had resulted in damage to shops, houses and vehicles and required several days of administrative control measures.

Following those incidents, authorities had taken several steps to maintain peace in the town, including security arrangements during festivals.

Residents said the peaceful conduct of this year’s procession was a positive sign and reflected efforts by local communities to maintain normal relations.

Khargone has a mixed population and officials had made security arrangements during the festival as a precautionary measure.

Participants said the peaceful celebrations this year sent a message that communities can observe festivals with mutual respect.
