arpeta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday used the election campaign platform in Assam to highlight what he described as a decade of development and stability under the BJP government, while urging voters to support what he called the next phase focused on economic growth and self-reliance.
Addressing a public meeting in Barpeta ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections, the Prime Minister said the past ten years had been devoted to restoring peace, strengthening infrastructure and protecting Assam’s cultural identity. He said the coming years would focus on economic expansion and positioning the state as an important growth centre in the Northeast.
Drawing a political contrast, Modi criticised the Congress, accusing it of following what he described as a short-term political approach, while stating that the BJP was working with a long-term development vision.
The Prime Minister also referred to the BJP’s foundation day, reiterating the party’s stated commitment to a development-oriented governance model and the principle of prioritising national interests.
Development narrative in campaign focus
Development remains a central theme in the BJP’s Assam campaign, with leaders highlighting improvements in connectivity, infrastructure and tourism as part of their outreach to voters.
Modi referred to Assam’s religious and ecological tourism potential, mentioning sites such as Kamakhya Temple and Manas National Park as examples of how improved connectivity has helped increase visitor movement and economic activity.
Political observers note that infrastructure development and tourism promotion have become key campaign talking points as parties attempt to connect governance claims with visible changes on the ground.
Agriculture and export push
During his address, the Prime Minister also referred to agricultural initiatives, stating that Joha rice produced in Assam is expected to find export markets in Europe. The move, he said, could benefit farmers by expanding market access for regional produce.
Agriculture remains an important electoral issue in Assam, particularly in rural constituencies where farmer income and market access continue to be major concerns.
Electoral context
Assam will vote in a single phase on April 9 for all 126 Assembly constituencies, making it one of the key electoral contests being watched this season.
The BJP is seeking another term in the state, while the Congress and regional parties are attempting to strengthen their position through campaign alliances and issue-based outreach.
Political analysts say the ruling party is focusing on stability and development messaging, while opposition parties are raising local governance concerns and economic issues.
Campaign entering final phase
With polling just days away, campaign activity is expected to intensify further with more rallies, constituency visits and voter outreach programmes.
Election authorities are also continuing preparations related to polling logistics, security arrangements and voter awareness measures to ensure smooth conduct of the election.
Focus on voter outreach
Across Assam, political parties are increasingly concentrating on booth-level organisation and direct voter contact as the campaign moves into its final stretch.
Observers say that beyond major rallies, door-to-door outreach and local mobilisation efforts often play a decisive role in determining electoral outcomes.
As the campaign enters its last phase, the key questions remain whether development messaging will translate into electoral support and how effectively opposition parties can consolidate their vote base.
With the state preparing to vote on April 9 and counting scheduled for May 4, the Assam contest is expected to provide important political signals for the region.
