Hyderabad: A long-pending demand of Andhra Pradesh is set to take shape with the South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone preparing to commence official operations from June 1, with Visakhapatnam serving as its headquarters.
Railway officials are in the final stages of preparations ahead of the launch. Administrative arrangements, staff deployment, jurisdictional boundaries and operational responsibilities are being finalised to ensure a smooth transition to the new zone. Work related to the zone’s official map and organisational structure has also reached its concluding stage.
The operationalisation of the South Coast Railway Zone marks a significant milestone in the railway administration of Andhra Pradesh. For years, political leaders, public representatives and railway users from the state had sought a separate railway zone, arguing that it would improve administrative efficiency and support the region’s growing transportation needs.
The new zone has been created through a reorganisation of existing railway jurisdictions and will cover a rail network of approximately 3,532 kilometres. It is expected to oversee major divisions including Vijayawada, Guntur, Guntakal and the restructured Visakhapatnam Division.
Railway officials believe the creation of the new zone will allow faster decision-making and more focused planning for railway projects in Andhra Pradesh. With the headquarters located in Visakhapatnam, regional issues can be addressed more directly, reducing dependence on distant administrative centres.
The move is also expected to strengthen railway infrastructure planning in a state that has witnessed rapid industrial and economic growth over the past decade. Andhra Pradesh hosts major ports, industrial corridors, manufacturing hubs and agricultural markets, all of which depend heavily on rail connectivity for movement of passengers and freight.
Industry observers note that a dedicated railway zone could help improve coordination for infrastructure projects, station development, freight movement and expansion of rail services. The zone is also expected to play an important role in supporting future economic activity along the state’s coastal belt and inland districts.
For railway employees, the launch of the new zone brings administrative changes as personnel and operational responsibilities are redistributed under the new structure. Officials have been working on staff allocation and related arrangements in recent weeks to ensure continuity of services once the zone becomes functional.
The Centre had earlier issued the notification required for operationalising the South Coast Railway Zone, with June 1 designated as the effective date. The development is being viewed as one of the most significant changes in railway administration in the region in recent years.
While passengers may not immediately notice major operational changes from day one, railway authorities expect the new zone to create a stronger framework for future expansion, improved service delivery and faster execution of railway projects.
As preparations enter the final phase, Visakhapatnam is set to formally take its place on the railway map as the headquarters of India’s newest operational railway zone, marking the beginning of a new chapter for rail transport in Andhra Pradesh.
Visakhapatnam, which will serve as the headquarters, is itself a city closely linked to the railway network. Apart from being a major port city, it has emerged as an important industrial and commercial centre on India’s eastern coast. The arrival of a railway zone headquarters is expected to further strengthen its strategic importance.
There is also an emotional aspect attached to the development. For many residents of Andhra Pradesh, the launch represents the fulfilment of a long-standing aspiration. Infrastructure projects are often measured in kilometres and budgets, but they also carry symbolic value. The South Coast Railway Zone is being viewed by many as recognition of the state’s growing role in the national economy.
Challenges remain. Expectations from the new zone are high, and railway authorities will be under pressure to translate administrative restructuring into visible improvements on the ground. Passengers will look for better services, faster project execution and enhanced connectivity in the years ahead.
For now, however, June 1 marks a milestone. After years of waiting, planning and preparation, Andhra Pradesh is set to welcome its own railway zone, with hopes that the journey ahead will be as important as the destination itself.
