Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia has become the most-capped player in the history of Indian women’s hockey, surpassing former India striker Vandana Katariya’s record of 320 senior international appearances during India’s Asian Games campaign in Japan on Monday. Hockey India announced a ₹10 lakh reward after Savita reached the new milestone.
The record is significant not simply because of the number attached to it. It represents a career that has stretched across more than a decade of international women’s hockey and includes the evolution of the Indian team from a developing side into a regular presence at major international competitions.
