Assam’s Moidam historic mound crematorium has been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List, marking the first cultural site from the cultural heritage category to be included in the list.
The site, also known as the Pyramid of Assam, is the third overall site in the North East, after Kaziranga and Manas, which were already inscribed under the natural heritage category.
The Ministry of Culture has been requesting the inclusion for a decade. Charaideo Moidam, an important historical and cultural site in Northeast India, was nominated for inclusion in the cultural category at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi.
The site, which resembles grassy mounds, is considered sacred by the Ahom community and is believed to be the resting place of an Ahom ruler or dignitary. The site preserves the remains of an Ahom ruler or dignitary, as well as valuable artifacts and treasures.
