India Protests Over Indian Fisherman’s Death in Sri Lankan Ship Collision

Delhi: India has strongly protested with Sri Lanka over the death of one Indian fisherman and the disappearance of another in a collision between a Sri Lankan ship and an Indian fishing boat.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has stated that the government has always prioritized the safety of Indian fishermen and has regularly raised issues with Sri Lankan leadership. Officials of the Indian Consulate in Jaffna have been directed to immediately proceed to Kankesanthurai and extend assistance to the fishermen and their families. The collision occurred 5 nautical miles north of Kachchatheevu Island, resulting in the loss of one Indian fisherman and the disappearance of another.

Two fishermen have been rescued and brought to Kankesanthurai shore, while search for the missing Indian fisherman is ongoing. The Indian High Commissioner in Colombo will also take up the matter with the Sri Lankan Government today.
