The brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata has sparked nationwide protests.
On Saturday morning, doctors across the country began a strike, announced by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), in demand for justice for the victim and to bring attention to the safety concerns of medical professionals.
The strike is expected to impact hospital services, including OPD and elective surgeries, in nearly all states. However, essential services like emergency departments and ICU will remain functional.
This strike is believed to be the largest in over a decade and has been supported by various other doctors’ associations. The Resident Doctors Associations in Amritsar and Delhi have announced indefinite strikes, suspending non-essential and elective services in solidarity with the Kolkata doctor’s case.
This protest highlights the urgent need for measures to ensure the safety of medical professionals and the importance of addressing violence against them.
