Taj Mahal receives property and water tax notices

AGRA: In an unprecedented move, the Agra Municipal Corporation has sent notices to the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) requesting payment of Rs. 1.9 crore in water tax and Rs. 1.5 lakh in property tax on the Taj Mahal, a protected monument.

The invoices relate to the fiscal years 2021–2022 and 2022–2023.

The notice warned that the Taj Mahal would be subject to legal action if this tax was not paid.

Rajkumar Patel, the supervising archaeologist for the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), stated that although the Taj Mahal has been a protected monument since 1920 in accordance with the law, it had never previously been issued a notice requiring the payment of any taxes.

However, both a notice for water tax and a notice for property tax have now been issued. According to him, the water tax is roughly one crore and the property tax is about 1.4 lakh. In this regard, the relevant authorities have been informed.
