CBI team reaches Kolkata to investigate RG Kar trainee female doctor murder case

Kolkata: A special CBI team reached Kolkata from Delhi on Wednesday morning to investigate the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor (second year medical student) at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal. Forensic experts are also included in this team. On Tuesday, on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, the investigation of this case was handed over from the police to the CBI. In the evening, a CBI team reached Tala police station and took all the documents including the case diary from there. After this, the CBI also registered an FIR in this case.

The CBI can take the only accused civic volunteer Sanjay Rai arrested in this case into its custody today. For this, permission will be sought from the special CBI court. The team can also visit RG Kar Hospital. Last Friday, the body of the female trainee doctor was recovered from the seminar hall located on the fourth floor of the emergency ward. Kolkata Police had started investigation by registering a case of murder and rape in this case. In the hearing held in the division bench of Calcutta High Court Chief Justice T.S. Shivagnanam on Tuesday, questions were raised on the investigation process of the police.

The division bench of the Chief Justice said in its observation that a Supreme Court decision states that in rare cases, the investigation of a case can be handed over from the state to the CBI or any impartial investigation agency to gain public confidence. In this case, the state agency has failed to gain public confidence, so the High Court has handed over the responsibility of this case to the CBI for a transparent, truthful and complete investigation.

It is noteworthy that the state government had already made it clear that it has no objection to the CBI investigation. On Monday, Chief Minister and State Health Minister Mamata Banerjee met the victim’s family. Despite ordering a police investigation, she had said that she has no objection to the CBI investigation. On Monday, she had said that she is giving time till Sunday to the Kolkata Police. If there is no progress in the investigation till then, she will hand over the investigation of the case to the CBI. But within 24 hours, the High Court handed over the investigation of this case to the CBI. The court has also ordered that the CBI will have to submit a report on the progress of the investigation during the hearing of the case after three weeks.
