Explainer: Hyderabad Commissioner cautions over cyber traps targeting young women

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has cautioned citizens about the growing risk of cyber crime, particularly cases where young women are being targeted through fake social media accounts created by offenders.

Police officials say the warning comes at a time when increased smartphone use and social media activity have made online interactions a routine part of daily life, especially among younger users. According to police, cyber offenders often exploit this familiarity to approach victims through fabricated identities.

Officials said many such cases begin with fake profiles created using photographs taken from the internet to appear genuine. These accounts usually send friend requests and slowly initiate conversations in order to gain trust. Once communication develops, offenders may attempt to gather personal information or misuse private details.

Police say a common concern is that victims sometimes hesitate to report such incidents due to fear or embarrassment. This delay, officials say, often allows offenders to continue harassment or attempt financial exploitation.

Commissioner Sajjanar has advised that such incidents should be reported immediately and that victims should not feel hesitant in approaching police. Officials said timely complaints help investigators prevent further misuse and take necessary legal action.

Police have also advised families to remain aware of the online behaviour of young users and encourage discussions about safe internet practices. According to officials, awareness within families plays an important role in preventing cyber offences.

Investigators also pointed out that those committing such crimes often assume they cannot be traced. However, police say that digital investigation methods allow authorities to track online activity even when fake accounts or masking techniques are used.

Officials have advised social media users to remain cautious while interacting with unknown persons online and to avoid sharing personal information without verification. They also stressed that suspicious behaviour should be reported instead of being ignored.

Police said cyber safety awareness has become essential as more communication and services shift to digital platforms. They added that responsible online behaviour and early reporting remain the most effective safeguards against cyber fraud.
