Good Friday observed across India with prayers and silent processions

Christians across India observed Good Friday with prayers, fasting and processions on Friday, remembering the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and reflecting on the message of sacrifice and forgiveness associated with the day.

Churches in different parts of the country held special services from morning, with devotees gathering for prayer meetings and traditional observances linked to the day.

In Kolkata, prayers were held at the Motherhouse of the Missionaries of Charity, where devotees gathered quietly to participate in the observances. The day was marked with scripture readings and reflection services remembering the life and sacrifice of Jesus.

In Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi, large numbers of devotees participated in the traditional Way of the Cross procession. The ritual recreates the final journey of Jesus Christ before crucifixion and is considered one of the most important observances of the day.

Participants walked in prayer carrying symbolic crosses while hymns were sung along the route. The procession was conducted in a disciplined and peaceful manner, reflecting the solemn nature of the occasion.

In the national capital, special prayers were also held at prominent churches including Sacred Heart Cathedral near Gol Dak Khana and St Thomas Church in RK Puram, where devotees attended services throughout the day.

Good Friday is observed during Holy Week, which begins with Palm Sunday and concludes with Easter. For Christians, the day is not a festival but a time for prayer and remembrance.

According to Christian belief, Good Friday marks the day when Jesus Christ was crucified during Roman rule after being sentenced by Pontius Pilate. Biblical accounts describe how Jesus was made to carry the cross to the place of execution, remembered as Calvary.

Church teachings emphasise that the day represents sacrifice and forgiveness rather than mourning alone. Many believers observe fasting and spend time in quiet reflection.

The observance is followed by Easter, which marks the belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is considered the most important festival in the Christian calendar.

Across India, the day passed peacefully with church authorities and local administrations making routine arrangements for prayer gatherings.
