New Delhi: The National Security Guard has launched its first dedicated Commando Conversion Course for women personnel drawn from state police forces and Central Armed Police Forces, opening a new training pathway into one of India’s most specialised security roles.
The 12-week programme at the NSG Training Academy in Manesar is designed to train women personnel in areas including physical conditioning, weapons handling, marksmanship, tactical intervention and hostage-rescue operations.
The programme is significant because specialised commando training has traditionally been associated with male-dominated operational units.
Women personnel have already been serving in different security and police roles, but specialised training for high-risk tactical operations requires a different level of preparation.
The NSG course is intended to provide that preparation.
The training will test participants in physical fitness as well as operational skills. Handling weapons, responding to armed threats, entering hostile environments and carrying out hostage-rescue operations require extensive training and coordination.
The decision to create a dedicated conversion course also reflects the changing role of women in India’s security services.
Women’s participation in policing has increased, but representation alone does not automatically create equal access to specialised operational assignments. Training and deployment opportunities determine whether personnel can move into roles that were previously less accessible.
The NSG initiative therefore has significance beyond the 12-week course.
It provides a route for women already serving in police and paramilitary organisations to acquire specialised skills that could expand their operational responsibilities.
For the security forces, a wider pool of trained personnel can also strengthen the availability of specialised teams.
The first course will be closely watched for how the trainees are eventually deployed and whether the programme becomes a regular route for women personnel seeking specialised commando roles.
