Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said the controversial citizenship law would not be enforced if his party was elected to power in Assam. Gandhi, who was playing with the traditional Assamese Gamocha at a poll rally ahead of the Assembly elections later this year, said he would work with all Congress workers to uphold the principle of the Assam Accord and not miss an inch of it.
He attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in his speech, saying that the party, along with the RSS, was trying to divide the state, the consequences of which would not affect Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Union Home Minister Amit Shah, but the people of Assam and the rest of the country. Gandhi accused PM Modi of stealing public money during the coronavirus epidemic to forgive loans for his two friends.
Gandhi promised to increase the daily wages of Assam tea workers. He said Assamese tea workers were paid Rs 7,167 a day, while traders in Gujarat got tea gardens. He promised to increase the wages of tea garden workers in the state to Rs 5,365 per day, saying the money would come from Gujarat traders. “Tea garden workers in Assam get 7 167 a day, while traders in Gujarat get tea gardens. We guarantee tea garden workers in Assam 5 5 365 a day. Where does the money come from? It comes from Gujarat traders.”
Gandhi praised former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. He said that every time he visits Assam, Gogoi gives his knowledge about the state on every trip. He said Gogoi was the government that united the people of Assam and put an end to the violence in the state at that time.
