The day is devoted to all doctors and healthcare workers who have risked their lives to serve the people. The National Doctor’s Day is held to honour the role and responsibility of medical physicians in saving lives. The purpose of the day is to recognise their roles and responsibilities.
During the Covid-19 outbreak, when the number of cases has skyrocketed, medical doctors have been working around the clock, risking their lives in an attempt to save as many lives as possible. Rather of thinking about their personal safety and that of their families, they decided to serve the country. They should be commended for their courage and perseverance in continuing to work tirelessly in the face of adversity.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL DOCTORS DAY
The day was established in 1991 to honour Dr. BC Roy, the former Chief Minister of Bengal, for his contributions to humanity. . Dr Roy was a great doctor who made an enormous contribution to the medical field. He was born on July 1, 1882, and died on a similar date in 1962.
On February 4, 1961, he was also awarded the title of Bharat Ratna. He was instrumental in the establishment of medical facilities such as the Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Victoria Institution (college), Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, and the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children. By the British Medical Journal, he was also dubbed the first medical consultant in the Indian subcontinent, towering over his colleagues in various fields.
