Dr. Mangi Lal Jat, a prominent Agronomist, has taken on the roles of Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General (DG) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) officially appointed him for a term of three years. Before this, Dr. Jat was the Deputy Director General (Research) and Director of the Global Research Program at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Hyderabad.
With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Jat is a respected authority in sustainable agriculture, focusing on agronomy, climate-resilient farming, and conservation agriculture. He is an alumnus of ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, and holds a Ph.D. in Agronomy. His research has led to significant advancements for smallholder farmers, particularly in Asia and Africa.
Dr. Jat has authored over 350 peer-reviewed articles and has held influential positions in renowned organizations, including ICRISAT and CIMMYT. As a Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) and recipient of several prestigious awards, he aims to address critical challenges like climate change and food security. His leadership vision aligns with India’s goals for sustainable development and nutritional security for its population.
